QUESTION: Am I correct that only the Book-Length/YA category considers works over 5,000 words? I wasn't sure about the Emerging Writers and Appalachian Writing categories. Do those categories consider 5,000 word excerpts of longer works?
ANSWER: Yes, Book Length/YA considers works of over 5,000 words, but the specifics are that it accepts a 7,500 word excerpt with a 1 page synopsis. Similarly, Stageplay can accept entries that potentially may have scripts that come in over 5,000 words, but the scripts are limited to a 30-page excerpt. If the play is longer than 30 pages, a 1-page synopsis is also required, the same as with Book Length.
